As an aside there is of course the proposed new railway crossing to link Lydney and Stoud, if that goes ahead we may well see improvements but thats more than a decade away if at all. The best bet, which won't be the preferred option on a rail forum is BRT routes made more often and actually linking people to where the jobs are!

Totally agree - a well planned and executed quality transport system can include buses as well as trains (or trams). A big problem here is that Bristol needs not only to have a decent multi-modal transport network, but needs one that crosses the Severn into Wales (and possibly out the other side into Gloucestershire). Plus of course the lack of co-ordination between housing and transport.

Cross-border issues do seem to be being recognised in North East Wales, so maybe with a bit of head-knocking together more can be achieved politically in South East Wales, although it would be a stretch for Welsh Government to support a Bristol Metro given Chepstow is already (in theory) part of the Cardiff one, with aspirations for 4 trains per hour.

Maybe someone should do some joined up thinking & not allow this sort of stupidity to happen in the first place?

If the jobs, & services, are in Bristol, then build housing in Bristol.
Same for Newport, Cardiff, Gloucester.

They have been building like mad for decades in Bristol, Newport and Cardiff but Chepstow is regarded as a more desirable place to live than Newport and cheaper than the nicer parts of Bristol and Cardiff.

Joined-up planning is unlikely with five different local authorities and two Governments involved.
It isn't as though Bradley Stoke, Emersons Green, Lyde Green and Charlton Hayes in Bristol have been trying to solve that in the last 30 years...

if you take that argument to it’s logical conclusion no-one should ever commute into London from say outside the M25.

Is there a serious proposal?

The issues are largely being driven by the huge demand for housing in Bristol that has seen prices sky rocket. Newport prices are currently rising due to an influx of Bristol residents looking for bargains. Same problem around Chepstow and other satellite towns.

Bristol is a booming city with a big demand for graduates. With the loss of the Pre-Beeching lines and tramways, it makes more sense to find somewhere where you can commute in from outside on the trains than to fight your way through the local roads.

Only answer I can think of is developing the site at STJ and an increase in the services/capacity during commuting times, building a bigger car park, building a new junction for the station on the M48 and having shuttle busses from the station to Chepstow etc.
