Even with a through service it will still be very slow at an hour for Newquay to St Austell. I really don't think it's wise to be getting your hopes up!

The bus takes about the same time (often longer), so for most people it'll be down to frequency and comfort. Buses from Truro to Newquay are frequent, from St Austell they're roughly hourly. I think a decent amount of people will choose the train when it'll be direct, due to its increased comfort (even if it's just a 150) over buses. Particularly so if the fares are competitive via either the £3 fare cap ending or local subsidy (as on the Northumberland line).
