And also why on a Sunday is there a 4 hour gap for Chester bound services at Shotton (1200-1600)
Sundays it is basically a Avani or a TfW service per hour but not both and most of the Avanti services are around lunchtime from Holyhead (probably to connect with the boats) which leaves a large gap in the TfW services going eastbound.
If Holyhead-Shrewsbury (and beyond) trains run semi-fast, and Llandudno-Manchester trains call at all stations, why do some of the latter not call, but some of the former do, leaving a 90 minute gap?
Think it is from the days that mk3s were used on the Manchester route so the Shotton stops were moved to an adjacent service.

The Mk3s were withdrawn four years ago (though they could stop at Shotton, and did on the odd occasion). That does rather underline the point that the current timetable is an ancient relic which should be consigned to the history books.

Why does 1D32 not call at Abergele, while 1W95 does? That can't have anything to do with former loco-hauled diagrams.

Part of the reason for the bizarre service pattern seems to be that politicians like having a direct service to/from each conceivable destination. So Llandudno has a token train from Birmingham and a token train to Cardiff.

The Llandudno thing has always confused me, if they had a decent shuttle service between there & Llandudno Junction it wouldn't be an issue, or they could split and half goes to holyhead, surely that would be a more reliable service.

1D32 is 1725 ex-MIA, 1W95 is 1523 ex-CDF.

You'd think so, wouldn't you? Instead there's a 90 minute gap in the morning. Given how rammed the trains are in the summer it would certainly help if those boat trains that go onto Holyhead had a Llandudno portion on the back (as 1D32 does in the evening).
