Contactless (out of zone) cap?

The other day I travelled New Eltham to Burnham in the morning peak, then back with a number of individual journeys.

oysterfares.com says "All Day Cap: £34.50, Off-peak Cap (from 09:30): £22.40" however I was only charged £29.50. I definitely hit the cap (final bus fare was 50p and the tfl go app says capped fare).

I can't find any reference to what the cap should be aside from the oysterfares site. Does anyone know where else the cap details are published?

There will be an extension fare programmed into the system for the different zonal boundaries and Burnham. These are however not published so there is no way of knowing which cap has been applied.

New Eltham to Burnham is £16.20 peak, £10.60 off-peak. The off-peak fare applies in the afternoon peak on the return journey. The Zone 1-4 cap is £12.80, so likely that is the cap you have reached, if all your other journeys were inside zones 1 to 4, with the extension fares charged to Burnham, although what those are can't easily be determined, other than that the combination of the peak and non peak ones might be £16.70.

After the outward journey, I did Burnham > Acton Mainline (off peak), North Acton> Eltham (entry 17:15) and then a bus.

I might be doing this journey again, but getting an off peak outward, so I'll see how that compares.

So, the fares are
New Eltham to Burnham £16.20
Burnham to Acton Main Line £5.50
North Acton to New Eltham £7.30
Bus £0.50
Total = £29.50

North Acton is Zone 2/3, Acton Main Line is in Zone 3 and New Eltham is in Zone 4.

My best guess is that
* the £7.30 and £0.50 contribute directly to the Zone 1-4 cap
* the off-peak journey from Burnham to Acton Main Line doesn't contribute to the cap at all, and will have been charged in full,
* the peak extension fare from Zone 4 to Burnham is £11.20 (£16.20 - (£12.80 - £7.30 - £0.50)).

It is quite possible that I have this wrong though.

I concur that you're likely to have been charged the zone 1-4 Anytime cap plus a couple of extension fares. In a logical world the extension fares would be the same as the fares to either Hayes & Harlington or Southall. If you're up for some correspondance then please contact TfL and ask them to break down exactly what fares have been charged. You can go into your journey history on your TfL account and select one of the journeys, then click on the contact us about this journey. You don't seem to be able to do that from TfL Go sadly.

If you make the same journeys all after 0930 then the most you'll be charged is the off-peak cap of £22.40.

I'd be very interested to know what they say. In the meantime, if you can say what they actually charged for each journey (ie was Jonathan right), that might be helpful.

I note that the 'paper' anytime day return from New Eltham to Burnham is £24.70, which would be valid for breaking the journey at Acton Main Line (but not North Acton) in either direction, and for cross London travel, and is a fair bit less than £29.50. The off-peak day return is £19.50.

The PAYG fares have been set at a more expensive level than the current 'paper' fares, and seem quite poor value.
