My son has recently bought a used car from a dealer. On test driving the vehicle it was noticed that the aircon was not blowing cold. The dealer said they would get it fixed and when he went to collect and pay for the car the aircon was working so the transaction was completed. Now, two weeks later and for one of those weeks the car did not move as my son was on holiday, the aircon has stopped blowing cold and makes a high pitched whining noise when turned on. The car came with a 3 month engine and transmission warranty which the dealer states does not cover the aircon. Do you think my son has any recourse or does he just have to accept it?

He should take it back to the dealer, the dealer is required to fix it.

I suppose it depends on what is causing the ‘whining’ sound. It may simply need regassing, and as a consumable, not guaranteed. My last s/h car had inefficient A/c which was fixed but you can get DIY kits or a Groupon code for a £50 regas.
If there is a hole in the air con the gas will just leak out.

Your son had a conditional agreement to buy.
It was conditional on a/c being fixed. In law that means properly fixed, not a band aid temporary fix. Sticking a bit of gas in a leaky system is not a proper fix, it is akin to pumping up a tyre with slow leak, superficial.
How was transaction done, was any part (eg a deposit) paid by credit card, if so could request a chargeback if dealer refuses to fix the car properly, although if they can't fix it, there is also legal option of returning and being refunded (voiding transaction and returning to position as if it didn't happen)
