I travelled from leeds to chapeltown, chapeltown to meadowhall and meadowhall to chapeltown on 17th feb. The woman behind desk asked me exactly what and why i was doing it. (just to note i was travveling home from uni to see russel howard)

anyway the ticket i was sold (with a railcard) was

Off peak day return between meadowhall and chapeltown for 1.85. Plus a leeds chapeltown ticket for 1.38 with Excess written on it.

What have a i bought and how? i am so confused as i didnt know what ticket type this was?

I wonder how long I can make my location on this f
She has sold you a regular day return ticket and then "over-distance" excessed the ticket in one direction from Leeds to Chapletown. This is an additional travel coupon which is only valid with your outward portion of your day return which means that you can travel between Leeds and Chapletown with the excess coupon and your outward return portion combined. The reason for doing this instead of just selling you a single from Leeds to Chapletown is that the excess is cheaper for you as you don't have the pay the full price of an additional single, so she is helping you out there.

In simple terms, you've been sold a return from Leeds to Meadowhall but the return portion is only valid to Chapletown.

That's a typo, I think I know what number he intended to type and if so it is correct (for Not Doncaster). (Please not another thread arguing over the correct excess procedures....)

You can tell it's a typo as railway ticket prices are always done in increments of 5 pence :)

All tickets with a YP railcard discount:
Chapeltown-Meadowhall cheap day return £1.85
Leeds-Meadowhal cheap day return (route not Doncaster) £5.55
Difference £3.70
Half the difference is £1.85
Is how the excess would have been calculated under the old rules, which are still used by the majority of booking offices as ticket issuing systems have not been changed and staff have not been informed of the change.

Like Bignose Mac, I fail to see how £1.38 can be arrived at. Could you check the ticket to see if this is correct please.

Sorry, Yorkie, I was typing out this post and a reply to your PM while you posted. I agree this thread isn't the best thread for said debate.

just like to point out that it was a typo, i meant to put 1.68 not 1.38. I can scan the ticket if you wish, it was definiteley not in multiples of 5. I remeber clearly as it confused the booking office staff very much and were so pleased i payed by card as she had no coppers!

Unless you're using Cubic FasTIS, which Chiltern and Northern do.

So when calculating excesses, you get exactly half the difference, without it being rounded to the next 5p (though some clerks fiddle the figures to get the 'correct' excess anyway). Similarly, manual discounts are rounded down instead of up.

So if you have a ticket that costs £16.50 before discount, applying a Railcard discount gives you £10.90, but applying that same discount manually (e.g. for a disabled passenger who doesn't have a Railcard) gives £10.85.

Cheers,

Barry

So you are saying that an odd excess fare should be rounded down? So £1.04 would become £1.00?

I was always taught to round up to the nearest 5p for all odd figures, but Barry is right about Fastis, it rounds up to the nearest penny.

Having just checked The Manual, there's no mention made of rounding excesses at all, so FasTIS is technically correct and everyone else is apparently wrong(!)

Having said that, back when I did my retail training I was told that you treated excess calculations in the same way as discounts, and rounded up to the next 5p if appropriate. Which makes sense, given Ticket Offices don't generally carry 1p and 2p coins in their floats as all the fares are multiples of 5p.

The two exceptions to the rule being "void days" and season ticket change-overs, which are calculated to the penny.

Cheers,

Barry
