Yes. Signalling. I don't think the GWML beyond Reading is ECML equipped.
I'm not sure quite what you mean by 'ECML equipped'. The signalling systems that the Class 345s will use are Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) in the tunnels (in this case Siemens' 'Trainguard' system), the standard Network Rail multi-aspect signalling with TPWS on the Great Western and Great Eastern Main Lines and the European Train Control System (ETCS) in the Heathrow tunnels which is intended to replace the BR-era Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system.

There is no intention to extend Trainguard over the GW or the GE but there are longer term aspirations to extend ETCS, and the overlaid European traffic management system (ERTMS), over the GW main line as this offers the same train protection as the obsolete ATP which will be replaced.

Similarly, would there be anything preventing a 345 from running from, say, Norwich to Bristol or Cardiff (once the electrification is complete)?
I'm sure that the trains could run over the lines, but I can't see the train operators taking kindly to the thought of a 90mph train mixing it with 125mph trains on a double track route.
And I'm not sure I would want to sit sideways for a couple of hours... :(

The journey time would be longer than travelling on GWR from Bristol and Greater Anglia from Norwich.
Also the interior layout is really suitable on 345's for long distance journeys.

Sorry, meant ETCS. That's what happens when you try to post something coherent in the early hours of the morning :lol::lol:. I can't see ETCS being installed any time soon over the rest of the GWML, given that I think they'd prefer to do it at the same time as electrification and that's been delayed. I agree on the last paragraph though, even the Electrostars are 100mph. Although I could see Crossrail going to Basingstoke via the Berks and Hants and Western Heathrow Access taking a couple of the terminators further out as suggested on another thread.
