Class 59 for BVE4 Released!

Hi all,

Steve Thomas has completed yet another BVE4 train. This time, it’s the Class 59 diesel locomotives, currently operated in the South East by EWS.

The train is now available for download at www.bveroutes-trains.co.uk/trains

Also, please note the announcement f the Class 57/3 for BVE4. I have been building the train for the last month or so, and it is progressing nicely. I hope to release it in the next month or so.

Try taking it on the Brookfield Yard - Kings Head run, it'll struggle up Quarry Bank

I enjoy driving the 59 more than the 66, the 66 bores me for some reason but the 59 doesnt

I think the 59 looks a bit too plasticy...and the sounds don't make me want to keep driving it. I will stick to the 66.

New BVE-challenge: How far can you get with a 59 between Quarry Bank and Haden Hill?

I have given the 59 a run on the to Craiginches (Aberdeen) route and it looks, sounds and handles pretty good to me. I have not handled a 59 but travelled on them often and worked on 66's from the start so have a fair idea of how they both sound and the differences are quite marginal ands for a BVE train builder to hear enough subtle changes between the two and build them into the train then I give them credirt for that.

There is a 'little' something about the desk that doesn't look right to me and can't pin it down but it could simply be the graphics used and it makes little or no difference.

The 59 were designed to pull 4,000 + tonns, which means that you loose top speed and 60mph gives the optimum power for that type of train. They were originally on a regular set of ballast wagons that were 60mph maximum so didn't need any extra speed.

The 66 was designed to pull up to 3,000 tonns and in general these coal trains are somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 tonns. This allows the 66 to get up to 70mph. However, while there is a loss in excelleration at maximum load, the coal trains they were built for are restricted to 60mph when loaded but 75mph when empty, therefore the 66 is ideal for that type of working. A 59 may pull more weight but would be restriced to 60mph with the 75mph empty wagons.

Personally few drivers liked the 66's. They are a very reliable engine but sadly EWS decided to purchase a load of them as cheaply as possible and they had very noisy cabs that vibrate terribly at full power, which is required for mucxh of the time with a full load and becomes quite uncomfortable on a long journey. Also there was no air conditioning and they really dry you out in very hot weather. Even brand new they were not a patch on the quiet running and comfortable Class 60.

Whatever, in this case for BVE running I appreciate the effort and time that Steve has put into into the train.

I havnt tried the 59 yet, but I'll agree with you that the 66 gets boring.

Well I drove the 59 this morning on the 06:00 Brookfield Yard - Wellingham Ludgate Hill and going full throttle up Quarry Bank, I hit the bottom at 40mph but yet, I thought I was going to slip to a stand or stall in the tunnel as I went down to 10mph still in Notch 8 but it was fun and I loved it, a nice change from the 66, I like the sounds but maybe the horn is a little too short but ah well.

About the horn, to me it looks as if when I toot it, it looks as if it is the loco brake handle that moves and not the horn stick unless that's just on my BVE :? Unless it is right and I am wrong, i've never cabbed a 59 but it just looks wierd to me.

Anyway, great drive, thanks to all involved.

the 59s horn if much better and the acceleration on it is better

Gave my shiny new 59 a run on NWM as well as Harcroft -- great two-tone horn, but it's too bad some of the sounds are pulled from the 66. However, looking past that, this is still a great loco with some very realistic, slow handling.

Rich as in me? I found a logo on Google, stuck it into Photoshop, messed around with it, found a font that was similar and made it smaller to hide the mistakes.
