Where did you see that? If it was between Ilford and Liv St it could have just been one of the regular ECS moves.

Testing could have been for any reason. It happens periodically to help diagnose a fault or check a fix.

Adding to that, most units that receive any type of modifications or require a test run after having maintenance done on them, usually run as 5F98 ECS with a fitter on board from Ilford to Witham, and a return working of 5V99.

This sounds like 5G02 to 5G10 which ran Sat 5th June, 317509 to Harwich and Norwich. Signal sighting tests something to do with Class 379.
