Class 172 to Birmingham New Street

So I came across this on WMR website, saying that 3 coaches instead of 4 coaches. They normally run 196s on the BHM - HFD line. Trains that have 3 coaches in WMR can only be 172/3s and 730/0s. Does this mean they are running 172/3s to New Street? Is this a rare occasion since they normally run on Snow Hill Lines?

There are booked 172 diagrams to keep route and driver retention.

No booked diagrams but they can and do still pop up from time to time when the 196s aren't playing nicely...

...and the 196s haven't been playing nicely over the last few weeks, so 172s have become a fairly common sight again recently.
