I'd assume that even if Chiltern were to replace the 165s within say 3 years that the 165s might still be used elsewhere?

Unlikely. They are 30+ years old and have outdated/obsolete electronics which are increasingly difficult to resource parts for.

You'll know more than me but I believe the plan was that displaced 168s would allow many of the 165s to get Christmas-treed? That should keep them going a while

Don't forget the 165's can also provide replacement parts for 166's at Great Western too.

Great Western also operate 165s. They are used on the Greenford, Windsor, Marlow and Henley branches and also on the Reading to Gatwick servces and the Didcot to Oxford and Banbury shuttles.

Dependent on Chiltern taking on the entire fleet of 68s and Mk5s, yes. That's by no means a certainty but fingers crossed!

Indeed and GWR are having the same issues with their 165s I believe.

I’m on the loco hauled service to Birmingham and a passenger told a member of staff that the plug socket wasn’t working. The staff member apologised, and said new stock was coming soon. Could this be the mk5 ?

Nothing has been announced and no decision has been made. 'Soon' would be late 2025 / early 2026 at the earliest.
