Nostalgia Trip on Mersey Ferry 19/03/1925
The Mersey Ferry Royal Iris of the Mersey is being retired tomorrow after 66 years service. Built in 1960 as the Mountwood by Phillips of Dartmouth for Birkenhead Corporation she was renamed in 2001 after a major overhaul.
I made my final trip on her on 19 March on the 1100 Explorer Cruise, a 50-minute trip downriver starting down river to near Hill Dickinson Stadium before turning, calling at Seacombe Terminal, continuing past Cammell Laird Shipyard, and turning by Tranmere Oil Terminal to return to Liverpool Pier Head. The weather was clear blue sky, no wind and calm sea.
Travel by train was 777009 from Liverpool South Parkway to Moorfields, 777023 from James Street to Lime Street and 197016 from Lime Street to South Parkway.
