I did this yesterday, all for £15 on a Cheshire Day Ranger ticket:

Wilmslow-Crewe (Arriva Trains Wales direct)

Crewe-Liverpool LS (Central Trains, via Runcorn)

Liverpool LS-Manchester Picc (Northern Rail, via Earlestown & Newton Le Willows)

Manchester Picc-Chester (Arriva Trains Wales via Warrington BQ and Frodsham)

Chester-Crewe (Arriva Trains Wales direct)

Crewe-Stoke (Central Trains, via Alsager and Kidsgrove)

Stoke-Manchester Picc (Virgin Trains via Macclesfield)

Manchester Picc-Liverpool LS (Central Trains via Warrington Central & Widnes)

Liverpool LS-Chester (Merseyrail via Birkenhead and Port Sunlight)

Chester-Stockport (Northern Rail via Mid Cheshire Line)

Stockport-Wilmslow (Arriva Trains Wales direct)

Over 7.5 hours on the trains, about 2.5 hours connection time. I stopped about 7pm (started 08:52 - ticket not valid 'till 08:45) but someone keener could carry on 'till midnight!

They are a really good Ranger, i think the West Mids and East Mids have a the edge for a day ranger though IMHO.
