Hi planning a trip to London, went through Trainsplit and got a cheap deal Avanti train Liverpool to Crewe then change at Crewe for the West Midland train to London Eus.

This seems quite tight has anyone else done it and what platform is the WMR likely to be when getting off at Crewe ?

If you miss this connection can you use your ticket to get the next one ?

10min is the minimum "official" connection time at Crewe, between any two platforms; I assume you have no mobility problems, so 12min is plenty.

The London train normally leaves from platform 7, which is one of the Bay platforms at the London end of the station, but you can check this online as you arrive. Your train will almost certainly arrive at platform 5, so you will need to use one of the footbridges.

I would recommend checking the platform numbers on line on the day. The information available on Crewe station is appalling. The on-platform displays only cover that platform. I couldn't find a departure list for the whole station.
I changed there unexpectedly last year, and I'm unfamiliar with the conventional platform use.

Without knowing exact times it's difficult to be sure, but in general it's likely to be platform 5 to 4/3 so relatively easy. Others can advise on the best coach (which may vary depending on whether you are on a 9/11 car Pendolino but at a rough guess the middle of the train, though if it's onto P4 rather than P3, the front would be fine too.

Yes and claim Delay Repay from the operator of the first train (Avanti), for the full journey.

Thanks :)

Looking forward to a 2 week city break in London, transport museum and Bakerloo "museum" line, booked a walk through mail rail tunnel tour :D

General exploring of the suburbs many of which used to be villages in their own right before being absorbed into London, Richmond is a particular favourite.

I've been following Joolz Guide to London on YouTube for insider tips and facts.

I made, I think, the same mistake recently in another post - the WMR trains used to use platforms 4 and 3 when they were routed via Stoke but now that they run direct to Stafford they tend to use platform 7 at Crewe (this saves having to cross the fast lines on the approach to Crewe when the WMR services are routed along the slow lines to/from Stafford).
I would suggest that Vespa uses the front footbridge at Crewe to cross, since this is direct to platform 7 from platforms 1-5. Also, when coming down the stairs there's a departure board immediately in front of you on the facing wall. It's usually on "page 2 of 3" when you want to see what's on "page 1 of 3" so a little patience is indicated. There's a similar display on the south-facing wall between platforms 1 and 5 so you can decide whether or not you need to use the footbridge in the first place.

There are lots of displays at Crewe that show departures for the whole station. However, a couple of them are parallel to the platform edge when perhaps they'd be easier to spot if they were perpendicular to the platform edge.

As you're away for 2 weeks, I'm guessing there will be a fair amount of luggage with you. In which case, I would not follow the recommendation of the footbridge at the London end (near platform 4 and the Gourmet Coffee outlet on that side of the station), unless you are confident in your own strength to carry a lot of/heavy luggage up the stairs.

My advice would be to use the lift if so, obviously if you are not taking a suitcase (maybe it's a decent size rucksack) then the footbridge would be fine. For quick access to the lift, I would aim for coach D or E on the 390. Then if you want to use the lift going down the other side, it is just beyond the ticket barriers on the right hand side. The lifts in Crewe are usually pretty quick (especially compared to the one in Shrewsbury, that thing while huge is very slow at just about everything) so that will not hinder you too much. The lifts in Crewe are a good size too, so should not cause any issue. The one for platforms 6-11 will put you between 6 and 11, next to the cycle rack and turn right for platform 6.

Obviously it depends on the times of your trains too, but most of the Crewe to London starters generally use platform 7, alongside platform 6. Using the same sort of connection with my cycle, assuming no big wait for the lifts, I can do that within 4 minutes and that is going from coach A at the back of the 390 to the north end of platform 7. If I was going to the far end of platform 7, to be nearest the barriers at most of Euston, it would take me no more than 5 minutes. Even my little sister, with a dodgy foot, could do the connection in 6 minutes!

So your 12 minute connection should not pose any issue whatsoever. Obviously, check screens when you get there (there's one opposite Pumpkin on platform 5 which usually updates quickly) and there's one next to the gents on platform 5, which takes far longer to cycle through the 3 screens of information.

If you choose to use the bridge at the London end, the one next to platform 4, you will be on platform 7 within 2 minutes. If it's an 11 car 390, aim for coach F or U I think, on a 9er I would go for coach G. You really can't miss the bridge, Crewe is really well signposted and there's normally plenty of people around to help.

Just as importantly, have an amazing time and I hope you will share the experience with us in the trip reports section. Especially things like the tunnel tour, I want to know more about that!

@Techniquest. Thanks for the further info...

I plan to travel light wearing only layers as required, less is more if I need anything I'll get them in in London, in addition to my suitcase and daysack, I usually bring an empty large strong bag for any souvenirs, gifts or shopping stuff.

I will give a trip report about the tunnel, I rode the mail rail train twice before, this is an opportunity to go at a slower pace:)

Because of my negative experience with Avanti and their clunky website and app even after signing in it still goes back to the original page and having to continually sign in, decided to go through Trainsplit the whole trip cost me £39.96p with a railcard discount, first time riding with WMT, if it's any good I may go with LNWR/WMT in future...

At present Trainsplit don't do Standard Premium tickets.

You got a good bargain there then!

If that's all you're taking, then yes you should be fine with the footbridge near platform 4. I personally think you'll find that, while noticeably different to a 390, the experience on the 350 shouldn't be a negative factor. 350/1s, /3s and /4s are all really good trains with power sockets and tables available, and I think the seats are fine. I've sat in a pull-down seat on a 350 with my beast from Birmingham to London and yes, OK it wasn't the best seat but it did just fine. The regular seats, you'll not have any issues with.

Enjoy the adventure, and I'm looking forward to hearing about the trip!

Hopefully Desiro roulette will be kind and not throw out a pair of high density 350/2s with the luxurious 3+2 seating.

On class 350/1 to Euston from platform 7 so your info is spot on :)

Unfortunately all table seats are bagged, have to settle for a seat with a flip down table, quite spacious and airy inside, must be all the big windows

The Avanti train is full of football fans and very crowded, most likely declassified, Standard Premium would be pointless.

I've noticed no direct train LNWR from Liverpool to London, it would have provided a real alternative to Avanti, is there any plans to set one up ?

There was one, it was an abject timetabling disaster, absolutely ruining the punctuality and reliability on the south WCML, and it won't (well, better hadn't) be back.

Ah that's why, shame it was a cheap return ticket, at least I'm not in a rush.

If I'm pushed for time I may have to use Avanti trading money for time,

Glad to hear you got there all good, and you have reminded me I have a TfW Delay Repay claim to send in. I'm surprised I'd forgot it to be honest, I'd planned to do it the best part of 2 weeks ago!

Thanks for coming back and letting us know how you got on :)

As there is an underground strike on March 1st, I may be forced to walk from my hotel to the Mail Rail tunnel tour location as a last resort if the bus is jam packed.

Walking time estimated according to Google map will be 1 hour 40 minutes.

Well it depends on the origin and destination of your journey I would say. I would highly recommend using TfL's journey planner and in the advanced search options only select buses to see what comes up. It might be that a short walk to a bus route, then a good length ride on the bus, with a short walk afterwards, might be possible and a darn sight quicker than walking the whole way!

1h40m for the walk, that's got to cover quite a few miles! I'd be personally up for the challenge, even if only in one direction, but then I'm a bit crazy like that

Are there options to use mainline trains for part of the route? I haven't a clue what's happening in London right now, but I am glad I'm not going there on Tuesday after all. It would not be a productive red pen fest with no LU!

Final food for thought, depending on your fitness level and the weather, have you considered cycling it? Plenty of those 'Boris Bikes' around normally, could be worth considering. I'd not want to do it without a helmet though!

Where are you staying? No doubt some of the forum’s good burghers of London will be happy to assist your route planning.

I’d also recommend getting CityMapper!

I’d start by exploring the river bus! Overground or walk to Imperial Wharf and there’s a pier there which will get you to Blackfriars... thence a brisk walk (or bus) up Farringdon Street to Mount Pleasant.

Citymapper is usually pretty good at establishing alternatives during strikes.

Came back on the LNWR from Euston today managed to get a table, interesting journey and about 40 minutes hanging round at Crewe for my Avanti connection to Liverpool, LNWR is good value for what you're getting if you don't mind taking your time, if you travel quick obviously Avanti would do that for you and pay more for the privilege.

Good 2 weeks in London exploring the areas hammering my oyster card getting my money's worth, in addition to the tube lines, I travelled on the mainline TOC within the London zones, also visited the Moorgate train disaster tunnel, it was hard to imagine it once was a London Underground line, it was strange seeing a mainline train in an LU station.

That time went fast! o_O Glad to hear you had a good journey, I too like LNWR for my journeys up and down the WCML. Such a shame they aren't an option to Glasgow!

Too quick if you ask me, anytime off work is always a bonus, I've stayed in Holiday Inn and 2 different Premier Inns wherever they are the cheapest rates,
Holiday Inn was at Royal Albert next to the DLR, the two Premier Inns are quite close to each other 5 minutes walk apart Earl's Court Olympia and Earl's Court Kensington, both very convenient for tube and overground service.

I usually stay in hostels now that I'm a bit older thought it would be time to spend a little more to treat myself. :D

I used to do hostels too, my last one was in LA back in January 2020. Good gravy that seems like such a long time ago! I'm too much of a snob these days for hostels, I'll not go if it means I have to endure a hostel! So I agree with the booking of hotels, that and Airbnb is my way of doing things now.

Quite, my (hopefully) upcoming trip in a shade over a week's time is in a hotel, and a 5 star hotel too o_O I can already feel the dread of returning to 'normal' hotels after my return to the UK. Assuming I actually go of course, Croatia is far enough away from Ukraine not to be too big a concern right now but who knows what will happen in the meantime?

It might be cheaper to travel Liverpool - Crewe - London with both legs London North Western. It would be slower than your current connection though.
