Where on the Central line do you physically require to push the open and close buttons to get off the tube? Just a thought I had when I saw them yesterday.

Was there ever a time the doors could be manually opened through pressing the button - during its initial years perhaps?

When new, yes. Same for a brief period on the 1995 and 1996 stock.

S-stock has functioning door open buttons, due to the air-con, the doors auto-close after 45 seconds of inactivity to help preserve the interior environment - hence buttons to re-open if necessary. Probably only used much at termini with long layovers.

Well that is interesting, I use the District and Hammersmith lines quite regularly. On the District (more than the Hammersmith City) its very hit and miss if this function is working or not. I have given up trying to work out why… but very often on a very hot day I have been sat on trains at both terminus, and mid section stations on a regular longer stop or a delay, and the doors are stuck wide open letting all the cold air out whilst the AC tries to work overtime….

similarly on freezing cold days, the same thing, the doors have failed to close after the allotted time, with a frosty perishing wind gusting through the train and freezing all its passengers.

Obviously on other occasions it works as you have described and the onboard temperature are therefore much more comfortable.

I have no idea why but it seems to work much better on the Hammersmith Line vs the District, where the doors seem much more likely to be left stuck open.

Drivers have the ability to override the auto-close function, it is also enabled at some busy stations during peak periods.

There has been a marked increase in the PTi platform train interface incidents (District) involving closing doors especially at terminal stations, where the driver is not constantly watching the cab monitors and auto-close is enabled.
