I've seen on here before that GTR actually proposed running Thameslink all-standard but at the time of the franchise award the DfT wanted 1st retained. Almost certainly nothing going to be done in that direction until next franchise award- there are many threads on here about the pros and cons of removing 1st class on london commuter franchises.

They won't want to remove 1st class fares from the GN side, too lucrative. Many commuters think that the reason standard class is so poor in comparison to 1st on the 700s is to encourage people to purchase 1st class season tickets!

Surely one for a consumer programme such as "Rip-Off Britain"? It would be funny if it weren't such a lunatic situation which is costing innocent people money.

It’s standing room only in standard class with seats available behind the partition that people don’t realise they are allowed to use. The current situation is a mess.

In contrast, the train I travelled on yesterday evening was full and standing in the rear 1st class section with only 25% seat occupancy in the adjacent standard class area. Sometimes, people perhaps know too much!
