The app isn't compatible with my phone (Samsung Galaxy running on Android.)
It doesn't seem to be compatible with many from the look of the reviews for it. It ran on my Galaxy 3 but crashed repeatedly before I'd even thought of buying a ticket with it.

Can't find a software version but 'software update' shows none available and the OS shows 2.3.6 Gingerbread.

mine is also 2.3.6, the only problem I have is it sometimes doesn't 'check' the ticket but that doesn't affect validity

Looks like the latest version of the app isn't compatible but maybe if you'd already downloaded an older version you can continue to use it?

I have chosen the Shires & Essex All Zones ticket. I already had the Arriva app from last year. However, I when I preview the ticket it shows

When I got it last year, it didn't say 'Intalink Explorer'.
This would suggest it may be valid as both an Arriva day ticket as well as an Intalink Explorer. The Intalink Explorer is not valid on the 724 between Heathrow and Maple Cross but the only the family Arriva Explorer ticket has this exclusion:

So if a 724 driver argues that it is an Intalink Explorer, then he won't accept it on that section.
I wonder, however, if Arriva drivers distant from Hertfordshire would also take this view that this m-ticket is actually two day tickets in one. Also, I wonder if drivers on other operators are prepared to accept Arriva m-tickets, even ones marked with 'Intalink Explorer'.

The Arriva Shires & Essex Day ticket is the same ticket as an Interlink Explorer.
The 724 is now not officially run by Arriva (though they own TGM who now run it) - so would only take it anywhere if it *is* an Interlink Explorer. But they won't accept it over that section.
I suspect you may have lots of fun getting non-Arriva drivers to take it.
But Arriva Shires & Essex includes Bucks, Berks, Beds, Herts and Essex, so would be valid in Reading and Milton Keynes, for example, unlike the Intalink Explorer.
I've used Intalink Explorers many times. They're valid on (almost) all operators in Herts and Arriva throughout their Shires and Essex area. I've used them to Slough, Luton and Bedford.

shows the Intalink Explorer valid to Luton and Bedford, but not Slough.
The point is that the Arriva Shires & Essex Explorer, as explained on the Arriva website, gives unlimited travel on Arriva Shires & Essex buses, in this region:

so includes Reading, Slough, Milton Keynes and Buckingham, which aren't on the Explorer map (although maybe Milton Keynes could be classed as 'Luton and beyond')

The tickets are the same. Intalink largely piggybacked some years ago onto an existing product.
I assume Intalink only refers to the validity in Herts as that's as far as they have any say in the validity (you'll notice their map does refer to Oxford too)
and they're a local transport organisation.

The Intalink promotional material isn't great, probably because Intalink can really only comment on services within Hertfordshire. Intalink is Herts County Council's transport organisation, essentially, although Essex County Council are listed as a stakeholder.
As far as I can tell, Arriva The Shires treat the Intalink Explorer as a day ticket for any of their services (Green Line excepted), and this includes routes like the 280 from Aylesbury to Oxford. Centrebus seem to be the same, allowing the Intalink Explorer to be used in Dunstable and Luton as well as in Herts. Uno aren't clear as to whether the Intalink ticket is allowed on their services which extend beyond the Herts border.
Basically the Intalink Explorer is an Arriva explorer, so you can use Red Rose, Centrebus, etc. Though good luck getting them to accept an Arriva m-ticket.
You can't use it on Green Line south of Maple Cross, though. I suspect that's a formatting issue with the Arriva website, as the day adult and child tickets also have the same restriction.

It could be that by the time the adult and child tickets were added (they're relatively recent compared to the family version) the Green Line route 724 was being run by TGM who only accept the ticket in Hertfordshire anyway.
The Arriva website was showing asterisks missing from adult and child Explorers a year ago, as I took advantage of that when I used their Catch the Bus free m-ticket last year. It was accepted on the 724 from Heathrow with no problem. The m-ticket was not branded as Intalink. It only said Shires and Essex.
I'm surprised - as I say the operator changed to TGM in 2011 and although they are owned by Arriva they don't advertise this fact and only accept their tickets in Hertfordshire as a member of Intalink.
Feel free to try it again as you obviously aren't believing a word I say - you may get lucky again.
