Cast Iron Sign

Hi,

my dad found this sign in a field in north wales and we have no clue what it is.

I had a "L&YR" sign which was railway related so I thought this 4in1 or 4inl might be also.

Anyone got any info?

It looks like a gradient marker of some kind, although we can be sure that the gradient wasn't simply 4:1 (or even 1:4).

Could be something like 4 feet in 1 mile (1:1320) or 4 inches in 1 chain (1:198) or something else along those lines.
