Career in Railways at 48

I've completed a Level 2 Railway Engineering course, have Sentinel sponsorship and PTS/OLEC training. I'm interested in progressing into track maintenance or railway drainage. What route would experienced railway workers recommend?

Do you have general construction site / labouring / trade experience already? If not, I would do that first and then apply to Network Rail when vacancies arise in your area.
