Career as a LOM / MOM

Hi all

I Hope you are all doing well.

I’ve come here to gather information about what a LOM does on a day to day basis, I’ve done bits of research online but ideally I’d like to know more about the role from an actual LOM or someone with previous LOM experience.

I’m currently a team leader in the maintenance side of network rail and want to progress either to a MOM or potentially a LOM, I’ve been applying for moms vacancies for over a year now and still not been invited to a interview despite my cv showing the similar experience to what moms do. I feel like I’m at a complete stand still at the minute and don’t know what to do.

Latley I’ve been noticing LOMs vacancies appear on network rails internal job site which has also started to interest me, hence why I am here asking for advice. Is there any LOM’s here willing to throw some information my way or even have a look through my CV and provide me with any feedback to where I could be going wrong and as to why I’m not being invited to a interview for the MOM roles I apply for.

As an ex MOM I know the role is highly sought after and as such you’ll have a high number of signallers to go up against the application process which maybe why your struggling to get past the first hurdle. I think the southern area is abit different as on my course they seemed to be from pway etc. that’s not to say you can’t do it but many will want a signalling background. I think the LOM role would be a good alternative if you can get it as moving from a LOM to a MOM isn’t unheard off. Many LOMs hold the tickets to do MOM roles when on call. Day to day stuff is often managing signallers and their competencies, assessments etc. if you came from a non signalling background then both roles would require signalling school beforehand
