If it hadn't got the red band, I'd have said that it was an old BR one that was painted for tourist use in scotland

Ah, thanks! It's so faded and the other side is in fresh BR Blue, so I thought it was some variation on the sectorisation era Highland liveries.

It certainly is similar to the LNER tourist green and cream livery, however it was slightly different in application on the mark 2s that were used on the Kyle line, and 5220 was formerly a Network Southeast vehicle.

The red stripe is the key difference and may have been applied since use on the Kyle line. Attached is ex-class 101 driving car seen at Inverness in the livery.

The '3' - which, presumably, means Third Class? - gives it away as a heritage livery, I'd have said.

As I say though, this carriage was never employed on the Kyle line. It passed into preservation straight from Network Southeast.

One of the biggest notable differences compared to the East Kent's scheme is that the LNER green and cream as applied to the mark 2s was arranged in a manner similar to BR blue and grey, with a green cantrail band and vehicle ends beyond the cream window band. As demonstrated by those stored at Tyseley, the LNER green and cream liveried vehicles formerly used on the Kyle line also look considerably more faded nowadays after twenty years of open air storage!
