Can a completely new station in central Manchester be the answer?

Regardless, shutting any platforms at any station in Manchester is a non starter. And the land around the line through oxford rd is not going to be given over to the railway, whether that be by complete altruism of thosewho own property in the area or the govt pays through the nose for it.

The 1945 City of Manchester Plan, among oddities like demolishing the Town Hall, mooted constructing Trinity station. But rather than what this sounded like, a city-centre replacement for Central, London Road as was and Exchange/Victoria, it was on the Salford side of the Irwell and described as replacing Central, Exchange and Salford stations. So what would happen to traffic in the southeast quadrant in unknown.

Let me try to understand this.

You are suggesting "a completely new station in central Manchester" which is actually in Salford, and further from the city centre (of Manchester) than the existing Salford Central.

Who would you anticipate alighting from trains at such a station ?

If you've ever attended meetings in the freezing mausoleum known as the town hall, you'd understand the desire to rip it down. Architecturally interesting doesn't mean functional! (The MOD and Foreign Office used to hold nuclear/chemical/biological/rocketry warfare non-proliferation briefing sessions there and people in certain kinds of jobs were encouraged to attend)

Mayfield is already being developed and the land where UMIST is already has development in the pipeline. Zero chance of any surface stations being built on that site. P15 & P16 is the most that will get built.

I think you need to provide a plan to validate the claim of a net reduction in railway footprint. Also to demonstrate that the parcels of released land, and any unused portions of the North Campus and Mayfield sites, would be of a suitable size/shape/location to be valuable to developers.

The Mayfield Partnership includes Manchester City Council and TfGM, and the planning application for the first phase has been submitted:
https://www.uandiplc.com/our-places/mayfield/.

We might as well just close the thread and leave it up to the construction of platforms 15 & 16 them! As no-doubt constructing an underground tunnel will also be prohibitley expensive.

Yes. But the location is within a stones throw of the Factory, Spinningfields, St. John’s and Castlefield. The city centre is growing and will envelop this area of Salford.

Surely shutting down Deansgate should be considered unless you could add another two platforms or through lines to it?

Regarding Oxford Road I'm sure I read something somewhere recently that did in fact suggest straightening it out, possibly removing two platforms in order to create two through lines.

If intercity services could be removed from the castlefield corridor, I’d envisage that Piccadilly p13&14, Oxford rd, deansgate, Salford central and Victoria could form the centre of a metro network. Hence building a station to accommodate intercity services from the west, with interchange through platforms.
