Is it possible to buy an ATW ticket from the station at the far end of the add-on part of the planned journey?

I might need to get from Southport home to Hereford quickly, and as Southport has no Advance ticket collection facilities the only alternative would be a walk-on fare (obviously using the cheapest combination route, i.,e. Southport to Chester, Chester to Hereford).

But if I could buy a £16 ATW + Merseyrail ticket I'd get a "free" coming back part to use another day, plus save a lot on the fare to get home.

I'm thinking if I go to the ticket office in Southport they might not know what I'm talking about as it's not their TOC's promotion.

I can't speak for the staff or facilities at Southport, but I can't see why not. These 'Club55' tickets are very clearly in the system and should be available from most staffed ticket offices. They are also available from the machines on trains operated by ATW and others.

Senior Railcard holders and Disabled Persons Railcard holders, over the age of 55, can get an additional £2.00 off the fare.

I'm an in-betweeny, be a few years yet until I can get a Senior railcard, and thankfully I'm not disabled. That's why the Club 55 deals are such a treat (except I've already bought Advance singles up to the end of March - doh  ).

I did read the ATW information but as it says "may be purchased at any station" I wasn't sure whether that was literally any station or actually meant any ATW station.

I will need to buy it before commencing the journey, as the first two legs of it are on Merseyrail trains, where I must have a pre-bought ticket to travel.

Next best option if Southport can't help would be a single Merseyrail ticket to Chester, then buy a Club 55 at Chester station - total £19.50 so still save about £9 on the next cheapest option, and can get back again with the return half for just the cost of another Chester to Southport single, anytime within the next month.

Thanks for the advice folks.

Got it and replied - thank you.

It wasn't Chester station I was planning to buy the ticket at, as that is half way through my journey and I can't board at Southport without an appropriate ticket. I'm fine with Chester, which was Plan B. :D

Actually events have overtaken and I am now going back today, which I have an Advance ticket for anyway. Thought I might not be able to (all due to elderly mother in hospital) but as they are now keeping her in over the weekend I can stick with the plans I made three months ago before she was taken ill!

Anyone going to be on the Liverpool-Chester line this afternoon? I know it is quite popular with several members on here. If so give me a shout!
