How does this 'part tendering' work?
I'd expect Surrey CC pay a contribution (probably based on the proportion of mileage added) to TfL on the extra bit they want - likely to be on the cost of the tender with any fares taken set against it..
So essentially TfL handle the bidding process, decides who wins and the ongoing administration of the service, and Surrey just give them a few quid for extending the route into their territory?
Is there any documentation about this?
N279 to Waltham Cross?
Everyone's forgotten the fact that the 81 runs way outside the TfL zone.
I expect one reason this route doesn't run 24 hours a day is that Watford isn't in Greater London. Night buses can get quiet near the end of their routes but TfL will pay for buses to run to places on the edge of Greater London 24 hours a day to provide a service even if the number of users wouldn't fully cover the cost of running it. It's not TfL's responsibility to provide this for Watford or any other towns just over the border. Same goes for any of the other towns which are just over the border, which is why I was surprised the service to Waltham Cross existed but the reasons for this have now been explained.142 Watford junction-Brent Cross ok not exactly a 24 hour or all night route but first bus in both directions 4:45am with last bus both directions is around 1am.
