Why the obsession with direct services? There was great care taken when building the Victoria Line so that it provides convenient interchange with other lines. Also, many passengers from the south west can change onto the Victoria Line at Vauxhall.

Perhaps you should go back to the OP and ask why he posed the question. He, or someone else, could of course have asked ''can anyone come up with a way of getting by bus from Kings Cross to Waterloo involving as many changes and as much inconvenience as possible, with the sole proviso that it must be accomplished with only one fare, because I'm a masochist, but a tight-fisted one?'' The charge of obsession would be better self-directed.

Having considered using bus from Waterloo to Euston the other day, at around 30 minutes, it was just too long a journey to contemplate, with no guarantee of reliability.
Indeed, the TfL journey planner suggests that the KGX-Waterloo bus journey will take 34-36 minutes, over a wide range of times across the day. It does not seem to make any particular allowance for prevailing traffic conditions. Meanwhile the via Oxford Circus underground journey takes 10 minutes (possibly plus station access time).
