Burton to Gatwick

Hi all, just looking at fares between Burton on Trent and Gatwick for mid September - an Off peak return (Which is what I need) is coming in at around £108 - I can also travel from Lichfield, just wondering why there is a £40+ difference between the 2 stations? The LTV-Gatwick airport ticket is £63.20 - it's only £8 each way between burton (for me to make a connection) so how is it £40+?? Is it the 'Cross Country Effect'?!

Can anyone find a cheaper (fairly) open return?

Thanks in advance!

depending what time you need to be in LGW, a super off peak return from Burton to Euston is £40.90 arrive after 12.59. an off peak single with contactless to Gatwick is £10 (from St Pancras).
otherwise a return from Tamworth to Gatwick is £63.20 valid to arrive London after 0945 and offers onward travel to Gatwick. you may get cheaper advances from Burton to Tamworth.

Hello

Thanks for the fast reply! we're looking at about £60 still then, with the off peak single added in..I guess the £63.20 also includes the return tube across to Victoria.

yes unless you can get a two together railcard perhaps, indeed it covers the tube and Gatwick Express from Victoria also..

No, it's the East Midlands Railway effect - EMR and their predecessors operate without much competition and have higher fares than the West Coast Main Line. Also note that the fare you are lookig at from Lichfield or Tamworth is for travel with West Midlands Trains and Southern only, which restricts your choices of train and exists as a result of competition on the WCML.

You aren't quite comparing like with like. The £108 Off-Peak Return from Burton is routed "via London" and allows travel either via Derby on the MML, or via Tamworth (and optionally via Birmingham) on the WCML. It has no operator restrictions and is thus priced on the assumption that you're going to use 'intercity'/premium services (EMR or Avanti, as well as Gatwick Express on the south end).

The £63 Off-Peak Return you're quoting from Tamworth is restricted to WMT & Southern. It therefore has to be priced cheaper to compete with the equivalent £83 interavailable ("not via Coventry/Birmingham") fare - given the reduced frequency and flexibility you get.

That said, there is certainly an element of Off-Peak walk-up fares being cheaper on the WCML than the ECML, and Burton's tickets being priced higher based on their MML validity.

The difference in fare levels is a result of the WCML twice being upgraded at the 'right' time - it was electrified back in the 1960s, when fares were largely still mileage-based, and the early-2000s Route Modernisation happened during the early privatisation era when fares were roughly tied to inflation.

By contrast the MML was upgraded with HSTs and saw linespeed improvements in the 1980s - at which point market-based pricing was in full force and BR often brought in big fare increases to accompany service improvements. In fact it was usually part of their business case for them. Midland Mainline and EMT did increase their Off-Peak fares quite a lot but they were somewhat constrained by Super Off-Peak fares being regulated fares.

Thanks for the replies - really interesting...didn't think about being able to travel via Derby with the higher fare. I'm not in too much of a rush, so will probably stick to the cheaper one. I generally find the LNR services pretty good.

I also use the LNR service to and from Derby from London Euston, the EMR service is a pile of tosh, and highly unreliable. LNR are also generally 10 or 12 coaches..
