I can't find trains from Bucharest to Sofia in July other than via a circituous route to Ruse taking nearly 24 hours!

I don't think it's a simple booking horizon issue because I can get sensible journeys in November.

Is there anyone in the know who can tell me if there's engineering going on that means trains aren't the way to do this journey this summer?

Atention!
Due to repair work in various sections of the railway network on Bulgaria territory, changes in train timetable are possible.
In case you have a travel document, please check the updated train schedule on the BDZ website for other possible changes: www.bdz.bg

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.

Dear passengers,

Due to repair work in various sections of the railway network, changes in train timetable are possible.

In case you have obtained a travel document in advance, please check the current timetable of your chosen train on the day of travel at the following address:

https://razpisanie.bdz.bg/bg
So it looks like it is a case of engineering works.

The route via Craiova-Vidin still seems to be open. Worth considering if you are travelling to/from Hungary and don't need to visit Bucharest.

Otherwise, Bucharest-Sofia by coach is about 8 hours, overnight.

I wouldn't be surprised if the summer timetable is still missing for some routes. The regular train is still showing until 12 June.

My limited experience of BDZ is that they divert around engineering works where possible (e.g. Kapikule train diverted via Karlovo with supplementary EMU Plovdiv-Sofia) so the problem may be the Giurgiu-Ruse bridge.

Currently BDZ's international data (BDZ's web site only shows about 6 weeks ahead) shows train 463, the Ruse-Sofia with the Bucharest connection, differently from 13/06 to 13/10 . In that period it is replaced by train 461 which starts from Ruse Razpredelitelna which is in the yard you pass through on the way from the bridge. The change in train number suggests the difference is significant.

I wouldn't be surprised if the summer timetable is still missing for some routes. The regular train is still showing until 12 June.
Yes, train 1095 Bucharest-Ruse also shows as running from 14/10.

Last year the bridge was closed for maintenance some time in the summer but had reopened by September when I went. There are various english-language pages on the internet mentioning 12h closures this year, not bothering with links as they do not explain the possible 4 month gap in train services.

Does anyone here know enough Bulgarian or Romanian to do a proper web search? Also, did a ferry start up again during last year's summer closure? Lots of interrailers may discover Craiova-Vidin this summer.

I travelled across the bridge by road in late January 2025.

It was reduced to a single lane with a convoy system in place for movements in each direction.

There were significant demolition / resurfacing works taking place on its easternmost carriageway (and the parapets were complete missing), mainly towards the Ruse side from memory.

Perhaps the traffic on the railway below the road deck is at times being disrupted due to these works.

The trains seem to have appeared in journey planners now.
