why is 1S06 still stationary at doncaster with the queue behind?
Terminated at Doncaster

This service is partially cancelled
This service was cancelled between Doncaster and Edinburgh due to a rail defect (IR).

Currently sitting between Bentley Junction and Doncaster out of the way as 5S06 (source https://signalmaps.co.uk/#doncaster:3034).

The BBC has reported on this ECML disruption and illustrated it with..er... a picture of a MML train at Sheffield station.
They couldn't tell their backsides from their elbows as far as the railways are concerned. One recent clanger from BBC Essex claimed that Beaulieu Park had opened on the ECML and not the GEML...

I think 1W16 was one of the first out of KGX when things were reopening so it probably took on the extra stops so it could ease passenger congestion at KGX. 1S09 was already well underway (Dept KGX 0859) and ended up behind 1W16 as a result of being held in the disruption.

EMR's 2K08 was diverted to Newark Castle to terminate, rather than Newark Northgate because of congestion caused by 1G04 and 1B80. Can't say I've seen that happen before.
It does happen, but only occasionally or during engineering work.

The Memsahib has been caught up in this; travelling to Edinburgh. Her train was diverted via Swinderby and Gainsborough, from Newark.

My son was on 1D08, the 0933 KGX to Harrogate. It left at 1008 and got to Leeds at around 1350, over 2 hours late. (RTT and Traksy both show the whole service as cancelled, though.) LNER have had ticket acceptance in place with WCML and MML connecting with XC, TPE and Northern all day, so he could have gone via Manchester or Sheffield instead.

I'm guessing broken rails like this get reported by train crews, unless there's some way of detecting them as you'd think the track circuit would still be fine
Where there are track circuits, if the rail breaks in plain line and that rail is not a traction return rail, in many cases, the track circuit will show occupied with no train present.

In areas of point work or for a traction return rail, the track circuit may not be affected by the break as there may be an alternative current path.

Note that some types of track circuit may "jump" a break if the gap is small enough. Although this does not normally apply to DC types.

As far as the railway is concerned, track circuits are not designed to detect broken rails and hence there is no reliance on them doing so.

If a driver sees a broken rail (and at line speed this is far from easy) or notices a rough ride / bump, they will report it to the signaller. The signaller will then stop the next train and advise the driver of the report and ask the driver to proceed at caution. They will ask the driver to inspect the line and report back after passing through the signal section.

Meanwhile, the signaller will contact control to report the problem. Fault control will in turn arrange for an appropriate infrastructure maintenance team to attend. Control may also ask a MOM to attend.

If the break is found to meet a certain criteria, it may be possible for trains to run over the break at 5MPH. The Permanent Way track staff may be able to fly clamp it (fishplates held in place with G-clamps) in which case, the speed may be raised to 20MPH.

A permanent repair will need the line to be blocked. It may be possible to do this during the day. But it depends on the type of rail and the type of break, the condition of the sleepers as well as where it is. Otherwise it may have to wait until a T3 engineering occupation can be arranged at night or at a weekend.

BBC North East Facebook has used the same picture of a 222, and then an 897... so even worse lol

Well that's me decided to either fly or coach home for Christmas. Can't rely on ECML/WCML etc for anything important. One thing after another
Not like motorways ever come to a stand due to accident, or planes are cancelled is it?

When was the last major infrastructure failure on the ECML? To be fair it seems to have been decent recently.

My personal experience with the railways has seen delays and cancellation rates far, far in excess of any other mode. I do 10k miles a year, fly about 10-20 times and take the train 10-20 times a month too. I've got a good basis for comparison

"Major infrastructure failure" is a strawman. There are plenty of delays, cancellations etc for other reasons and as a customer I don't care what the reason is. (Stevenage fire in October, signalling failure in York a week ago)

You've got to go out of your way to ignore issues to reply along the lines of "pfft it's no worse than the alternatives"

Thameslink core a mess with multiple cancellations and delays. Kings Cross only had 3 trains in the platforms when I left and only one LNER, so looked quite a rush for that one!

It did look like this might have happened as a No Description Alarm appeared in one of the berths for a while.

Why is it always our nearest and dearest, ("normals") who get to ride on the rare track? (Boultham Junction to Pyewipe junction in this case)

I was on 1E82 Lumo service we were held for around 55 mins in Retford platform alongside 1A63 GC service held on mainline waiting for 1S06 LNER service to pass having run north on Southbound track. We were 65 late at Kings Cross due to no platform.

As a bonus prior to that we ran through York Yard rather than P3 due to congestion.
