The Railways - Simon Bradley
Great Britain's Railways - Colin Maggs
A Short History of Trains - Christian Wolmar
Steaming Through Britain - Chris Ellis & Greg Morse
The World's Greatest Railways - Christopher Chant
The Illustrated History of British Steam Railways - David Ross

I am sure others will have more recommendations.
