Strange question to ask on a rail forum I know but here goes,
Is there anywhere I can get a simple one off blood sugar test?
My GP has me down for a review in 12 months time but I would like to check it before then.
Thanks.

If you know anyone who is diabetic and regularly does their own blood sugar tests then you could ask if you could borrow their tester. YOU MUST USE A FRESH LANCET AND DISPOSE OF IT SAFELY AFTER THE TEST. If there is an NHS drop in centre near you, you could go in there but it will be reported to your GP

You can buy a testing kit from your local chemist whose name rhymes with hoots.
You will get a testing meter and a limited supply of testing strips in it.

Thank's for the reply, I was aware I could buy a testing kit but don't want to spend around £25 to £30 if my levels are back to normal, I just want a one off test and if the levels are still high I will return to my GP.

Last one I bought was £15 quid (I think !)

IIRC large chemists will do the test on the premises?
Even small pharmacies will do this, as long as you're there at the same time as a member of staff who knows what they're doing.

B**ts are terrible for things to do with blood sugar and diabetes: for years they had a range of foods including chocolate branded as "diabetic foods" which used Sorbitol as a sugar substitute (anyone who's ever overdone the "sugar free" sweets will know the effect that can have...) despite this being unnecessary for diabetics, at least type-1 anyway. When i was diagnosed as a child my grandmother spent a fortune on this overpriced garbage because, bless her, she didn't want me to miss out on treats!

Thanks for the replies,
I went to town today and only one of the big three pharmacies offer the test, it's the one with the same name as a high street bank, unfortunately the member of staff qualified to do the test was not in today!
At least I now know where to go for the test.

I have type 2 diabetes and like you was offered a test every year, but as it is done by the practice nurse I asked her if I could have it every 6 months and she said yes no problem. So maybe just ask if you have not already.

If you are concerned that you may have undiagnosed diabetes, then your GP should do a test immediately when you report this. If this is the case, it's likely that at different times you will be experiencing symptoms of both low (hypoglycaemia) and high (hyperglycaemia) blood sugar with the latter being more frequent. Symptoms vary but will almost certainly include a raging thirst that you can't seem to placate, and a need to pee frequently, to the extent that you'll feel like the liquid is passing straight through you. Prolonged periods of hyperglycaemia can cause serious damage to the kidneys and liver, so if you're experiencing this I urge you to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
