Best deal on this trip - conflicting advice

I am hoping the wise owls on this site can help me.

I am planning a trip from Harrogate to West Drayton shortly, either Friday or Saturday. I intend to return a couple of days later with an overnight break in Peterborough. I am getting conflicting advice. Chesterfield station assusre me that an Off Peak Return will do the job, no problem, while Leeds station Travel Centre believe I would be best buying a series of tickets ie HGT to KGX, KGX to West Drayton, then another ticket back to KGX, followed by a ticket to Peterborough and then a further single to Hgt.

Having read the horror stories on here about folks inadvertently travelling with the wrong tickets, I'd like to get it right.

TIA

Thanks Haywain, much appreciated. Having seen so many of your posts I trust you entirely. But why no open returns via KGX? Looks like LNER are losing punters - or is it to deter people from travelling?

LNER abolished (almost all) single fares a few years ago, in the interests of simplification, and it has been very widely discussed on the forum. I am afraid that, for your journey, there is unlikely to be a workaround that doesn't involve buying multiple tickets. You could get a through ticket for your outward journey but would need to split at Peterborough on the return to allow for your overnight stay. You can search for suitable tickets on the forum site or Trainsplit which might find you cheaper options, especially if you can use Advance tickets for parts of the trip.

LNER want people to commit to specific services. They are happy to lose custom because they are bankrolled by Government. At busy times the trains are full, and at quiet times taxpayers foot the bill. But for further discussion on this topic, check out the existing threads by doing a search (if you can't find them, I will do a search for you and paste the results here if you like).

Do you have a specific itinerary and/or route in mind?

Are you happy to be tied to specific trains or do you want some flexibility?

The forum's ticketing site will sell the correct tickets for the itinerary you select, and if you want advanced options e.g. additional interchange time, or change at a specific place etc, it will allow you to tailor the itinerary to your requirements.
