Best bus tracking and journey planning app

This has almost certainly been aired before, but I'd like to hear others' experiences on apps for bus tracking and journey planning. I was quite happy with UK Bus Checker until they launched a new version, which made it trickier to plan a journey starting from anywhere other than my own location. The old version inexplicably left out several GB tram systems, which seemed crazy to me.

I am beginning to realise that Google maps is fairly good, but am put off by friends telling that when used in Europe, some transport systems just aren't covered.

The Passenger based apps are great for specific operators.

I'd say if you live in a Citymapper area, that is the best "all round", with Moovit a close second. They both allow you to plan trips, with alerts at each stage of the trip, as well as look at live features from specific stops.

I generally use Google Maps, and if I want to track actual vehicles go to bustimes.org in the browser and use that.

The one thing is don't like an UK Bus Checker is that not all the data is live. I live in an area where there is no live at all. Despite the operator providing real time data and it available in other third party apps

Good point. I've never delved into whether there is real-time data available when the app just shows timetable info. Maybe I'll add some other third party apps to my phone and surf around to get the best data when I come up against that problem.

There is this website as well, which you can use while at the bus stop.
whereismybus.org
It will use your mobile's gps to get the local bus stop information. It is very simple, straight to the point and what i like is there is no app to install or search for your bus stop.

These 2 apps don't support cross-area journey planning even if the start and the end points are both covered, for example, Southampton to Bournemouth.
