Bath Spa to Todmorden routeing

Hello - just a quick one, because it's urgent and I'll never get the hang of the routeing guide, if that's OK?

Is a Anytime return from Todmorden to Bath Spa valid via Newport? I'd like to avoid Cross Country this evening!

What does it say for ROUTE on your ticket?

Any Permitted, etc

Not via Manchester I don’t think.

If the ticket is not already booked, I'd book it via the forum site following the AW+CU routeing. National rail website seems to fail to show it as a valid routeing, so you will need an itinerary from the place you booked to show that you are obeying NRCoT 13.1 if any railway staff dispute the validity of your ticket.

Provided your ticket is routed "not via London" rather than "via Stafford", then yes - map combination AW+CU permits it if you go via Accrington. Bizarrely it's not permitted to go via Newport if you get to Manchester via Rochdale (the obvious route).

In practice I don't think anyone would bat an eyelid since the ticket is valid for use via Rochdale if you continue via Birmingham, and the Northern guard/barrier staff aren't going to know that you're planning on taking TfW rather than XC.

It's clearly an oversight as travelling via Newport is a perfectly reasonable route.

As it happens, the trains that I'm planning to catch requires a change at Crewe, where both valid routes intersect, which I guess makes this a particularly low risk.

By the way, when you say via Accrington, I'm assuming that means changing at Preston (and Blackburn, Accrington or Burnley). In which case, am I right in assuming doubling back at Preston is valid? (I might decide to go that way anyway, if there are disruptions.)

You’re not “doubling back” at Preston with AW+CU. The fact that you approach the station from the south and leave southbound doesn’t mean this. The routeing guide maps don’t show this. It’s similar to Manchester-London Saint Pancras via Sheffield in that you’re not “doubling back” via anywhere although you might see Dore station twice.
