They’ve just received an email from trainline stating the following below:

To Whom It May Concern,

We are writing to inform you that your Trainline leisure account has been suspended as per request from Avanti West Coast.

This is due to a dispute between the Train Operating Company (TOC) and you.

Trainline's Customer Services team cannot assist in lifting this as it was requested by Avanti West Coast directly.

Please be advised we will only be able to re-direct you to Avanti West Coast

Once the dispute is settled, your account shall be reinstated.

Kind regards,

Revenue Protection Team

What’s the likelihood of this case being thoroughly investigated by TOC?

Strong. They've already been conducting their audit, it seems. This will be another expensive lesson I'm afraid.

I guess you could see if the option to pay £250 to settle the case is still available.

If not, all you can do is wait and see what they say next (unless you want to write to them and fess up to the fare evasion.)

Can you also explain what an audit is??
It's where they go back through all the scan data, purchase data, and identify the owner of the account and their travel patterns in order to collect evidence.

Does thst usually take a few months or several? If they’re not to hear anything back, will it be safe?
You can't assume anything really. They have six years to bring a civil claim for the losses, or an unlimited length of time to bring a fraud prosecution (these are very rare though). You should be aware that it doesn't look great that you had a very similar short faring thread previously with a different company and now "your friend" has used basically the same method with another train company. My advice is to stop talking about it all in public and wise up; you will get found out easily.
