Auto stop and reverse.

Hi, I am looking at running a shelf railway line around the top of my sons bedroom, either with the Bachmann G Scale Thomas the Tank Engine range, or OO, not decided yet, but the train can not go all the way around the room, so I will have to have a buffer stop at each end, but how do I go about making the train automatically stop and reverse, so I can basically turn it on for him and let it run backwards and forwards? He is only very young so won't be playing with it himself for a good few years, but would be nice for him to watch,

Any advice would be great, cheers.

I do remember a layout which had this on, although unfortunately no idea how it was done! At the minute everything is going digital (search for DCC), which you should be able to do a stop and reverse with. However DCC isn't cheap, so you might want to have a look round for not-digital ways.

Most of my OO gauge stuff is digital anyway, like you I remember this auto stop and reverse somewhere but can't for the life of me remember where.

For some reason I think it could have been the York Model Railway based at the station, although I visited quite a while back now.
