As for the night buses - the trial period ended and they still weren't covering their costs without subsidy. Hardly 'couldn't be bothered'.

Company is back in profit, electric buses ordered and with new management at the helm the only way is up.

As for NAT, their recently announced 'night' services are actually until 0013 - the arrival time of the 2345 buses to Pontprennau and Culverhouse Cross respectively.

Also, why would they pull out of Barry when the services are very busy and profitable - if anything they need larger buses!

Yes, the night bus to Horsham still runs. It's the N8, operated with Sussex Coaches allocated with Mercedes-Benz Citaro Ü Facelift (F10 BUS / BK10 MVM ex Gloucester Park & Ride from Bennetts Coaches) and Citaro K C2 (BN17 JVC ex demonstrator). The N8 only runs on Friday late evenings/Saturdays early mornings, and Saturday late evenings/Sunday early mornings.

Without wanting to sound rude it's absolutely nonsense. Where on earth did you hear that or is it just made up?

They trialed an improved 98 for a few weeks - hardly anyone used it.

The Arriva Crossriver Saturday night buses were finally axed back July 2014, they had the following -
N23 Liverpool to Liverpool via Birkenhead, Prenton, Upton, Moreton, Bidston, Birkenhead Park,
N37 Liverpool to West Kirby following the day time 437 route however didnt operate a return journey to Liverpool, rather the bus ran back empty from West Kirby. One trips extended the extra couple of minutes to Hoylake for no known reason.
N450 Liverpool to Liverpool via Birkenhead, Duke St, Gorsey Lane, Liscard, Seaview Rd, New Brighton, Rake Lane, Liscard, Gorsey Lane, Liverpool plus one trip which ran as far as Hamilton Square Station only. The N450 ran both Friday and Saturday night whereas the others didnt.

A year or 2 earlier there was also the N51 Liverpool to Spital Crossroads which again ran back empty. Following complaints from residents of Neston that they wanted it extended to serve them, Arriva said yes, nobody used it and the whole route got axed as a result.

The Arriva night buses got axed mainly over costs - they insisted on having security guards loading the buses at Queen Square for no apparant reason which must have cost a fortune, and the use of Queen Square itself made no sense as the normal cross river services don't operate from there, so not exactly making life easier for anybody looking for a bus back to Wirral! Stagecoachs Liverpool to Bromborough night bus which currently runs, picks up from the same stop the day time service does and follows the same route, allows prepaid tickets and passes and charges the usual day fare prices (or it did last time i used it) - its usually very busy when ive been on it. This is another reason Arrivas didnt work, as it was a £4 flat fare and no prepaid tickets allowed, with the exception of ENCTS blue/orange and Mersey Yellow.

On the subject of Merseyside night buses, I believe a number of late night services on weekends have been announced through December running up to Christmas as per previous years but I havn't had chance to look into it yet.

The only 24/7 bus on Merseyside is the 86A which operates from Liverpool ONE to the Airport.

Quick look on the Merseytravel website shows no extra night buses are laid on this year, just the usual ones. They have added 2 late night trains on Fri/Sat nights throughout December leaving Liverpool Central at 0130 running limited stop to Hooton on Wirral Line and Southport on Northern.

N37 Hoylake extension was so buses could then go back dead to Laird Street depot, there's a couple of ways drivers take buses out of service West Kirby to/from Laird Street depot, one following the 437 route, the other going via Hoylake-Meols-Moreton, i often see the hybrid cross river buses out of service going through Moreton.

N450 was interesting, that was the weekend version of the 150 Birkenhead-Liverpool night service, N450 followed 432 from the roundabout that links the Wallasey tunnel to New Brighton

I think the 150 was withdrawn same time as the rest of the Arriva night buses, just seen the 150 was indeed withdrawn same time as the other night buses in 2014, there was also 500 Speke-Liverpool-Birkenhead

The security guards at Queen Square were because of trouble, people on night out until the early hours, some would then start causing trouble, apparently aforementioned N37 could be very hairy at times because of this

I do love it when people complain & demand buses serve there area, then promptly don't use it.

Just to add, 2006 Arriva brought new buses for the 82/86/86A, & made the 86A 24 hour numbered N86, i think the N86 was same as the other Arriva "N" night buses had operated, premium cash fares only no passes valid, the current version, passes are valid & normal day fares are charged, i believe they do well[although i've never been on them] especially with students going down to Smithdown Road

'more' operate a 24-hour service with routes m1, N1, m2 and N2 in Bournemouth and Poole, albeit with the 'N' routes effectively being the same as the 'm' routes with a couple of routing variations.

Together they provide a half-hourly service between Poole and Bournemouth, and an hourly service between Bournemouth and Castlepoint/Southbourne.

Liverpool has the 86A/86C on the city center to Alleton/Airport route. Every 30 minutes to Allerton and then every 60 on to Hope University and the Airport via South Parkway. Very popular with students all week.

The Metrobus route 10 from Crawley to Gatwick is 24/7/365. I think it has had a bus at least once an hour every day for some years.

Birmingham have the X1 Birmingham-Airport, hourly through the night

They run in various directions from the centre - though some are only a handful of services per night. The route from the centre out to the university campuses is commuter frequency during term time, though "only" half-hourly at other times.

That doesn't exactly mean much, it all comes down to the population demographic, you typically need larger numbers of those in their 20s in order for a night service to work as this is the main demographic that go out at the weekends.

The problem is where the busiest nightclubs are tbh. If they started from Sauchiehall St not Union St it would still be running. Far easier to just get a taxi instead of having to walk all the way to get a bus. The N7 was the same.

Im sure they used to start from Sauchiehall st and run down to Union st . Many young people will rather get a taxi from the town .

Birmingham only has the X1 City-Airport that runs all night, [Coventry section starts from 3am], but Birmingham have 1am last departures on most of the main routes from the City Centre,

And first services start around 4am so there's not a huge gap in service on most routes, on the 63 for example it's only around 2 hours between last and first bus on weekday mornings.
The 50, 63 and 74 have hourly departures on Friday and Saturday nights.

Lothian buses service 100 operates every 15 minutes through the night. N22 between Ocean Terminal and city centre on Saturday/Sunday morning operate every 15 minutes.

Yes, most areas of the city have all night buses (or at least until 3am) on weekends now, some routes run through the night all days of the week, most notably the N7 (exact same thing as the 7 between Hove, George Street and Brighton Marina) and as you mentioned, the N25 (the Old Steine to Falmer via all the University campuses and accommodation along Lewes Road). The N25 I am sure during term time is the most frequent night bus service anywhere in the country at a frequency on paper I think of one every 6 minutes, covering much of the 24/25 bus routes. In practice though, I (as a regular user of the route) have seen buses run slightly more frequent than that (at every 3-4 minutes or so).
