The on train ticket machines, used to have the ones, as used in the ticket machines on the stations. They came on rolls, but for some reason they went back to the paper bog roll type.
Back in the 1980's British rail introduces two machines, one was called an APTIS and the other was a PORTIS. The first one was used in train stations and was the size of an old Betamax video recorder and the portable one was the size of a transistor radio as we had back then.
The tickets were the same as the machines now issue, but were printed by a dot matrix via a ribbon. While the portable one had a paper roll in and I think was a bubblejet type printer. These lasted for many years until the railway was privatised.
Exciting I found at the time as I had loads of the roll ones. They were printed LYDNEY TO GLOUCESTER RTN. and had a PRIV on and the fare was 0.75 pence. Now that journey costs 9.80 rtn anytime.
