I'm staying in Arbroath on the evening of Saturday 1 August and planning to head to Aberdeen the next day. Aiming to arrive mid to end of afternoon.

I'd like to stop in Montrose and Stonehaven on the way, spending around an hour in each

Normally I'd just buy a single and break my journey, but the first train out of Arbroath isn't until after 10.30 on a Sunday, which will make the day a little bit of a rush.

Options are either to get the bus to Montrose between 8 and 9 and then buy a rail single from Montrose to Aberdeen and get on and off again in Stonehaven.

I've been looking on the stagecoach website, the east of scotland dayrider that comes up as an option seems to not go as far as my journey. Is there any other dayrider tickets I could use for the whole journey on the bus?

East of Scotland DayRider should be valid, you can use it the whole way from Glasgow right up to Aberdeen for instance:

£12 for that entire area is a very good price, considering how expensive some of the Stagecoach routes can be.
It is, in fact I believe its actually cheaper than singles between certain of the places within the map.

Thanks - I did see that map, but neither Stonehaven nor Aberdeen appear on it - so my assumption was it I couldn't use it?
That map is missing some vital information. The East Scotland Day Rider is valid to Aberdeen on the X7. Also is seems on the 107 (Montrose to Stonehaven) and 727 (Stonehaven to Aberdeen Airport). Best place to check is Stagecoach App.

Thanks. This is really helpful and seems like the best way to do the journey. I'll download the app and have a proper look.

Indeed, and for the relatively short journey from Edinburgh Airport to North Queensferry, it's £11.70 single on the 747.
