A stab in the dark - Millerhill? Part of the old marshalling yard? I've always been meaning to go there, but (as I can't drive) getting there by bus is a pain in the gluteus maximus!

That's exactly it :)

It's a bit of a pain to get to, even with a car, there's a bit of a walk through what used to be the yards.
If you do go and start at the bridge to the north, walk along the little path at the top of the embankment, then go down the first bike track into the wooded bit; it's the easiest place to get down into it. After that, you just have to find your own way across the woods, marvelling at all the stuff that's been dumped there :p

If you do go there, see if you can find the Volvo - Photos here and here

You'll see other things in the forest, like this and this

Another one for you all here...I have a few possibles but I'll stick to one at a time.
Sorry the image is a little blurred.
What I will say, as it isn't part of the quiz (hope this doesn't give it away) is that it is a Class 158 Arriva Trains Wales unit...

At or close to Ferryhill, between Darlington and Durham? There's a quarry close by, and I think that's a train going to/from it.

Yes, its Ferrhill station in County Durham. Thrislington quarry is in the background and that train is in the middle of running round twice in order to access the mainline heading north.

Being a SPT 170, I think that may well be the case, doesn't look clean enough to be when it was delivered! ;)

joking aside there are some electrification masts, so if I remember right, there are no electrified lines north of the forth, and I think that the livery is the strathclyde area one, so I would assume it is on the west coast main line

Don't really know, but I would guess somewhere on the western fringes of Edinburgh, judging by the landscape and style of housing.

Although not a specific guess, I'm going to have a stab that it's somewhere on the eastern side of the Fife Circle. :)

...Although that section of line isn't electrified yet, I seem to recall that there are active plans for electrification up as far as Aberdeen. Also, the scenery closely matches my recollection of the Fife area from when I passed through there a few times on my Rover back in May. <D
