Any ideas....

Got a week off coming up and thought I might head into London and cover a few bits and pieces off - incl one of the last TLs from Moorgate.

Want to travel from either Northampton or Wellingborough, but don't fancy the £27 cost of a Travelcard from N'hampton or £36 (I think) from Wellingboro' - any suggestions on how this could be reduced ?

I know some posters love a challenge so I'd be interested to see what you can come up with.

Fares on MML are scandalous, so use the WCML instead. As mentioned on another thread, get a Southern Day Ranger and use that from Milton Keynes.

Assuming the OP is going on a weekday (Moorgate thingy doesn't run Saturdays IIRC), then the DaySave is not useful as it can't be used before 1000. And the Moorgate stuff runs mornings but I'm not sure if it does in the evenings.

The only alternative to use it in the mornings would be to get the Peak DaySave at £20 or to get London Midland Only Advance fares from Northampton to London and vice-versa with a Peak Travelcard from there. Not checked out the fares, but the LM Only Advance fares start at £5 single IIRC.

The latter could be done with EMT if reasonable Advance fares exist.

Hmm, for me the difference between 24.70 and 27.00 is so small you may as well get the 27.00 Travelcard from N'hampton and have the flexibility to leave from either Euston or on the Southern service to Milton Keynes.

But yes going via the West Coast is your best bet!

They do run evenings and I agree the difference is so small it isn't worth it (unless wanting to go to other places down south of course!)

On the MML it would be possible to get a return Wellingborough to Bedford off peak £7.60 or anytime £8.90 then walk to Bedford TIC and get a Thameslink Daysave for £14.00.
It really then depends what else you want to do but there are cheaper one day travelcards than the all zones and oyster of course.

Thanks for clarifying that yorkie, I don't know why I thought it was mornings only!

But yes, I'd say it's a better bet to go for the TC from Northampton really as then at least you don't have to restrict yourself to Southern services up to Milton Keynes.
