Slightly off subject but Phil Collins drumming is not a patch on Frost from Satyricon or Inferno from Behemoth ...

He has however done exactly what was needed of him for the band he was in, no different to Don Henley in the Eagles or Ringo Starr in the Beatles. None of them have the excellence of Bonham, Moon, Ward, Paice or half of Norway; however all three are incredibly successful and unbelievably wealthy (worth over $750m between them). Collins and Henley in particular are proficient songwriters and lead vocalists (Starr obviously gets somewhat overshadowed by Lennon-McCartney), so whilst their drumming isn't god-like, their respective bands would have been considerably worse off for their absence. The same is true of other people in other rock bands playing other instruments: Roger Glover is an unremarkable bassist yet fitted brilliantly into Deep Purple; Ozzy Osborne is at best a mediocre vocalist, but he was absolutely integral to Black Sabbath's sound.

Actually, Phil Collins' drumming was pretty proficient on Selling England by the Pound.

In terms of other instruments, Peter Gabriel's flute playing was something that the band missed after he left IMO.

He's a proficient drummer in any regard, I just meant he was suited to what was required to be the drummer in Genesis, and he brought a wealth of other things to the table too. Buddy Rich he ain't, but by no measure is he not a good drummer.

Selling England by the pound i can hear in 1 go.

Now that's interesting, going slightly off topic I still listen to albums/CD's etc in their entirety, as I always have done since I bought my first LP with my Saturday job money. I know that over the last few years I have joked with many younger people that their attention span cannot last to 40 minutes, but I have never got into this idea of just listening to a track (or buying a track) or having my Ipod (1st gen, obviously) on shuffle. I f I play Nursery Cryme I start with 'The Musical Box' and finish with 'The Fountain of Salmacis'!

Another thing ...has anyone seen any Genesis 'tribute' bands? I've seen ReGenesis a couple of times and thoroughly enjoyed them.

Yeah mate you are absolutely right to be fair. Also I don't think Genesis would have had the success they had if Nergal (Adam Darski) had been their vocalist, although he does a very good job in Behemoth. :D

Watched Genesis in the mid 80's at Wembley Stadium (Paul Young was the support act). Collins was a good drummer (did some good work with Brand X), but not a patch on Bill Bruford, who was always on another level to other jazz, prog, fusion drummers of the era, apart from Alphonse Mouzon and the peerless Billy Cobham. All time fave gig was watching Cobham doing a four hour set at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, again in the mid 80's. Stunning!
