Another Boundary Zone 6 query

Can a Boundary Zone 6 to/from XXX ticket be used without an accompanying Travelcard? Would it be legitimate to purchase such a ticket for a point-to-point journey entirely outwith the London area?

Apologies if this one has already been raised, I couldn't find an earlier thread for this.

No. They're only valid in combination with a Travelcard or equivalent (Freedom Pass, 60+ Oyster, TfL Staff Pass, etc.) They also can't be used if you're using Oyster/Contactless Pay As You Go, even if you've reached a Daily or Weekly cap.

Some people say that Boundary Zone 6 tickets are excesses which can only validly bought to extend the validity of a Travelcard. However this isn't documented anywhere publicly that I'm aware of. Yes, they are intended for use with Travelcards but that doesn't mean they can't be used individually.

Such a limitation would have to be clearly stated at the time and point of purchase to be enforceable and there are many ways to buy Boundary Zone tickets (e.g. at TVMs) where no such warning would be given.

As such I'd say it's valid on its own, provided it's only used from the first station beyond Zone 6.

Thanks for the replies. No one I know has been asked for their Travelcard when checked outside the boundary, and it would seem that this could not be enforced anyway, whatever the intention of the ticket.
