Did 442s which are fairly similar to your beloved HST not feature this device then?

When I was on them? No.

Slammers were more rateable than 442s though!

In terms of motors, are the Lym Slammers or 442's more rateable?

Prefer slammers overall, but since I don't remember how slammers sound (over 2 years since the last sight and sound of a CIG/VEP on the mainline outside the Brockenhurst - Lymington Pier line), I'll have to vote for the former.

And I'm aware they have some horrible traction package fitted to them as well...

Rather the proper noise off [42]3417 myself. Looked mighty fine that did! Mind you, I did also like the Connex South Central slammers, although I cannot provide a numerical identity for one at the moment. The Southern green liveried slammers also looked quite the part on the Arun Valley!
