Hi all,

Well here I go again. Some of you may have read about my day in Anglia back in June (report can be found here). Shortly after that trip the plans for AGA to utilise DRS Class 68's to cover for unavailable units became known, and I started to formulate a plan for another trip, this time with an overnight stay in Ipswich.

I had a very reasonably priced first class advance on the 0600 from York which I'd take as far as Peterborough - happily I managed to get to the station in plenty of time for it on this occasion! No awkward explanation to the guard required. Couple of strange things happened before the trip even began - I saw a pink DMU in one of the far platforms poking out from behind the wall. It looked like a 170, but it couldn't be. Had ten minutes until my train so I walked over to have a look, turned out to be 185104 with a new promotional vinyl for Manchester Pride.

185104 York 19/08/2016 by Flash 3939, on Flickr

The second strange thing that happened is, as you might have spotted in the background on that picture, my train pulled in whilst I was taking it, a whole 10 minutes early. I dashed back over thinking I might have got the time wrong, but it turns out it left Northallerton 7 minutes early and arrived at York 10 early even though Northallerton was a booked stop. No idea what happened there, but it sat at York until correct departure time.

I wondered if I'd possibly peaked too early on this trip, as I tucked into breakfast in a very lightly loaded refurbished mk4. I quite like the faux leather and red highlights, but the blue mallard spec curtains really need replacing with red or grey ones. After arriving at Peterbrough I found out winner 91119 had shoved me there, leaving nine 91's to get. Good start to the day!

I then boarded EMT 158847 to Norwich - the advance taking me as far as Ely and then the remainder on an Anglia Plus ranger. The guard made a good point which I hadn't considered - that we were booked away from Ely at 0815 and the rover isn't valid until 0845. This hadn't occurred to me before, as I'd only ever done it on weekends. I was prepared to get off at Ely and wait for the first valid Norwich or Ipswich service but the guard offered to let me stay on, as the 158 was practically empty, which was much appreciated.

I hadn't drawn up a thorough plan for the day, but after hearing a pair of 86's were on their way to Ipswich I decided to head there first and then go back to Norwich to do the Wherry lines in the afternoon. I started the day needing five of the Anglian 90's, so seeing 90010 leaving on the 0930 to Liverpool Street was a good sign - possibly one to get in later.

I grabbed a coffee from the new Starbucks on the concourse, watched the 68's arrive from Lowestoft and then went to board the 1000 to Liverpool Street. This was hauled by 90013, which was less welcome than 90010, as this would be the fifth occasion I'd had it. Every time I've done an Anglia Plus it's turned up! As we left Norwich, I saw 90001 pull in on the next arrival, another required one. I had plenty of time to get to Ipswich in time for the 86's, so I left 90013 at Diss and waited for 90001 to take me to Ipswich. Whilst waiting, 90009 passed heading for Norwich - another potential winner. I really like the shot of trains approaching Diss from Norwich, but it's also a fair walk back to the footbridge and the train was about 5 minutes down due to TSR's so it wouldn't be hanging about. I got the shot and put in a spirited dash over the footbridge to board 90001. Four AGA 90's to go...

90001 Diss 19/08/2016 by Flash 3939, on Flickr

I was in luck at Ipswich, four freights passed in around an hour, including the 86's I was after. However I was keen not to spend too much time here as I was going to be there in the evening and also Saturday morning, so I went back to Norwich. I went blind on this one as I was in the wrong part of the platform to see the loco before boarding, but it turned out to be dud 90015.

At Norwich I wandered off to get some lunch, returning to the station in good time to board 37419 & 37405 on the 1455 to Lowestoft. Same pair I had when I was here in June, but unlike last time the driver was giving them a real hammering. I've since learnt that the through wiring on this set is currently disabled (temporarily?), so the 37's are working harder than normal and going through quite a bit more fuel as well apparently!

37405 Lowestoft 19/08/2016 by Flash 3939, on Flickr

I'd never been to Lowestoft so I wanted to have a quick look around. Despite being overcast (and occasionally drizzly), it was also rather hot on the mk2's, so I wouldn't have fancied staying on for the return. Lowestoft is OK - marginally nicer than Great Yarmouth I'd say. Didn't see much of it in an hour to be fair. Couldn't believe it had a Wimpy's though, as if they still exist!

Slightly less exotic than the outward journey, I had to make do with pair 153335 & 153322 on the way back. I had a plan for the rest of the evening now - so I took these as far as Brundall. The plan was to photograph the 68's on their way from Great Yarmouth to Norwich, the 37's five minutes later on their way to Great Yarmouth, then walk up the road to the local chippy and wait for the 68's to come back from Norwich for a run to Great Yarmouth and back.

The 68's at Brundall on their way to Norwich

68016 Brundall 19/08/2016 by Flash 3939, on Flickr

Winner 68019 returned from Norwich and I jumped on. The 68 sounded great as they always do, but clearly not working anywhere near as hard as the 37's had to. The layover at Great Yarmouth is very short and after changing ends we were heading back to Norwich. Now my moves log is very modest compared to most people on here, but 68016 is actually dud from a run between Edinburgh & Inverkeithing back in February.

My plan had one final move which would get me to my hotel for the night, but it involved a fairly tight +5 at Norwich onto the 1930 Liverpool Street service. I'd worked out from earlier in the day that it should be required 90010, but I'd misjudged somewhat as I was greeted with 3x 321's in the platform. I made the connection so decided to take them anyway for something different - so three winners 321425, 321320 & 321363 were taken to Ipswich. I'd never been on a mk3 based EMU at those kinds of speeds, certainly a noisy and raw experience with the windows open and the motors screaming!

I went to check in at Bridge Guest House, 2 minutes from the station. Highly recommend this place, very reasonable and couldn't be better placed for the station. Even got a room overlooking the line, but I wasn't ready to call it a night yet. The sky was turning a nice dusky purple colour so I intended to make the most of it with some tripod shots at Ipswich.

I was open to the idea of another run to Norwich if a winning 90 appeared, but they'd all seemingly disappeared for day. I left around 2230 and returned to the room, satisfied with the shots I'd got. I was surprised just how much goes on even at that time on a Friday night, so I couldn't resist watching out of the window until after midnight. Plenty of locos making their way to and from the Freightliner yard at the side of the station, and container trains still heading through on their way to and from Felixstowe. In addition to the usual traffic, the NR test train pictured above with the Europhoenix 37's pictured above made a couple more runs through on a very convoluted route from Cambridge to Peterbrough via Felixstowe & Norwich!

Day 2, returning home via London, to follow ...

Enjoyable read, with some nice pictures. Thanks for taking the time to write it up.

Assuming it stuck to diagram 90010 will have retired to Crown Point after working the 17.00 Liverpool St to Norwich. The 19.30 Norwich to Liverpool St is diagrammed for a 12 car 321, formed by the 17.02 Liverpool St to Norwich.

Ipswich is quite under rated in many ways. It also has a good transport society (not just trains) and the local RCTS branch always gets good speakers.

Some of those shots are brilliant! Sounds like a first great day there and I'm looking forward to the next.

Yep, I even had a pdf of the diagrams on my phone but I wrongly assumed they just repeated every five hours so didn't double check. When I boarded the 321's and looked at the diagrams I noticed my error! Makes sense why they do it, to get the 321's back to Ilford and keep the 90 at Crown Point.

My eyes were not playing silly with me on Saturday night when I saw the rear part of 185104 at Leeds, there is a pink 185!

Sounded like a good first day on the rover :)

Fantastic write up and photos, in one of my new favourite parts of the railway!

Unsurprisingly, I'm going to ask... Do you still need 90003?

Sorry, it took a while to get round to posting this, here we go

Day 2

Woke up at around 0600 to see 66505 (I thought, through bleary eyes!) pulling out of the station with a liner towards Felixstowe. When I woke up properly at 0800 I looked at RTT, it was the 0105 Lawley Street to Felixstowe I saw. According to a TOPS list posted on another forum, it was indeed 505. Another hobby of mine is running so that morning I took the opportunity to do the local parkrun, so I had to forgo the included breakfast at the hotel. The route was hilly, mostly off pavements and it was windy, so it wasn't the quickest but good to try a new course.

I got back to the hotel around 0945 and had a quick shower before checking out and heading to the station. I had an advance on the 1209 to Liverpool Street so by the time I got to the station I had a couple of hours to get some breakfast and watch a few movements around the yard, which is always busier at weekends when less freight runs. I considered walking into Ipswich for a decent breakfast but after clocking up alomst 10km already my legs didn't fancy it. I settled on a cinnamon swirl and iced latte from 'Coffee Link' which I didn't hold out much hope for but it was actually very good.

Couple more pics from Ipswich

Class 86's were on the same service as the previous day, including 608 which I've not seen since it was under its previous guise of 501.

I was 80% sure I'd seen 90014 heading to Norwich as I walked from the hotel to the station, and that it would likely be on my service to London. This turned out to be correct and 90014 took me to Liverpool Street for the second time in as many months. It seems 013 & 014 follow me around when I come to this part of the world...

Not the best journey if I'm honest. I stand by the fact that the standard class seats are better than the first class seats in these sets, but I wish I'd booked first today. My ipod had left itself switched on and drained the battery, so I had to endure some loud festival-goers all the way to Chelmsford. The last portion of the journey was a lot more enjoyable, and it's nice to walk past the loco that's just hauled you along the line when you get off at the terminus. Much prefer the loco on the London end rather than the country end.

I had no plan for London, but I had a few hours until the 1900 non-stop from Kings Cross to York, so I went for a look around Covent Garden and ended up in the transport museum shop. From there I went to Paddington to see if I could see any green HST's - I don't spend much time in the south west so I was yet to see one. In the end I got lucky and got one, plus the Harry Patch power car, in half an hour there.

Difficult to photograph well due to the reflections on the dark paint, but they do look better in real life than I first thought

So much for keeping the sets together!

43181 London Paddington 20/08/2016 by Flash 3939, on Flickr

I took the short trip to Marylebone from here, I had a 50-50 chance of a required 68 pic, having 008,009,013 & 014 but needing 010-012 & 015. The set was already in the platform and as I walked up the platform I saw it was a silver loco on the end which was a good start. I was in luck...

68015 London Marlyebone 20/08/2016 by Flash 3939, on Flickr

I decided on a whim to go up to Wembley, taking 165039 to Wembley Stadium. I was in no doubt as to this was the end of the Oyster area, as the PA announced it pretty much all the way from Marylebone, must be really irritating for passengers making regular journeys from further afield. I saw 68008 & 014 on the Chiltern depot just outside the station, so I was definitely lucky with 015.

I looked around the designer outlet and stadium area, as I'd never seen the new Wembley. I wanted a different route back so walked to Wembley Central, further than I anticipated and not a great decision as it started to rain. Took 378204 to Euston, seeing various locos around Wembley & Willesden including sleeper liveried 92023 & either 86101 or 401.

I was going to wait at Euston for an arrival from Glasgow which I was told would be Independence Day liveried Pendolino 390107, but it was about 20 down at Milton Keynes and I didn't fancy a fast walk down Euston Road so I gave up on it, got some dinner and a coffee for the train and went to Kings Cross. The EMT hired in set was waiting to form a Skipton service.

43059 London Kings Cross by Flash 3939, on Flickr

My train home was dud 91125, taking it to within 25 miles of knocking 91103 off top spot on 368 miles. I always like non-stop York service, as it's often quiet and a fair bit quicker than the stopping ones. I had another five people in coach B with me, if only Jeremy Corbyn had booked himself on this service it might have avoided a lot of fuss...

The full flickr album from the trip can be found here, but as I took so many and they take so long to process from RAW files, I've got more that I may add at a later date.

Was a cracking weekend yeah - the weather could have been better and it was a shame the same 37's were on the short set as last time I was there, but can't complain! The worst bit is 37419 had even been to Fort William and all over the shop with the observation coach Caroline but it found its way back to Norfolk in time for my visit!

What a beast of a trip, the 37s and 68s I'm immensely jealous of! Looking forward to sampling both again next month.

Another excellent read, shame you didn't get more than one winner 90 after all. A trio of required 321s must have been a welcome bonus!

The shot of the GWR green HST at Paddington is absolutely gorgeous!

Cheers Tech. Now I look back I wish I'd chased a couple more winner 90's or some more miles on 90034 but I'll be back to clear the last 90's before too long! Fast becoming my favourite region to visit, and still plenty of new lines in the rover area to sample at some point.

Now I'm 90% there with my new moves spreadsheet (you may have seen the other thread), I'm glad of the three 321 winners, but I was unamused at the time! The new sheet automatically calculates number of trips per loco/unit and a cumulative mileage, so I may be more motivated to chase winners from now on! Is this how it begins??

Excellent photos and write up. It seems like there's a lot of interesting things to see at the moment and changes too.
I've been wondering about a trip to East Anglia to sample the 37s, are they finishing soon or are they going on through winter? I'd assumed it was a summer only thing. Judging by the amount of heads out of windows it looks like a bit of a crank fest!
Ipswich doesn't look all that different to the last time I was there which was 1987 (good grief I just realised that was nearly 30 years ago), nice to still see 86s there.

Ipswich panel in Colchester ASC, one of the, if not the. busiest panels in the Country on nights, Signaller does not stop from the time he books on to the time he goes home, he covers a fair area, Bentley (Suffolk) to Haughley and Ipswich to Wetsterfield and Felixstowe Line to the Terminals
