Depends how long the DfT want to continue being idiots with IEP. On that criterion, up to another thirty years in frontline service before incompetence at DfT disappears.
Now there is the sad part of the story as I feel they will become the reliefs and background services.
As they say "sometimes it is better to burn out than slowly fade away"
Personally I love the HST as a concept and a revelotion and they will always have a home on our network!
Just take out Bob Russell (MP for Colchester) and then the service can be axed - it was him who wanted it in the first place, the original Bid Spec didn't have the service in.
Although I'd hope that a replacement service which is a little more useful would take over, such as through services from elsewhere.
In my opinion, the shuttle Colchester North- Town is rather pointless. A swift walk up North Hill, and your in the town in 10 minutes. If you take a bus up the hill, you are there in about 3 minutes if the traffic is quiet, 5/6 minutes if it's busy. The train takes a ridiculous 8 minutes, and takes you to the 'wrong' part of town for the main shops- so then it's another 4/5 minute walk to get to the shops. I hardly ever use the service, but it often goes out empty- the only busy trains being the Walton services.
