I agree entirely that what happened was awful.
However, someone I know once pointed out that the Army is not a social exercise and nor is it a place where happy fluffy bunnies abound. Sometimes you do horrible things, war is not a game.
An unfortunate side effect of joining the Army, British or American is that you effectively sign everything away, and the nation owns you for the given period.
