ALR's....

(These questions may have been asked plenty of times but I'm really sorry for asking....)

Ok, just a couple of questions about ALR's....

1) Where can I purchase them? At ticket offices and/or online

2) Can I use them on any train, any where?

I'm asking because I fancy trying out the FGW Night Riviera before mega bashing on this coming friday (05/09) and then on saturday to Skeggy.

ALRs are not valid on the Sleeper. You're better off getting advance tickets.
You can purchase them at ticket offices. I'm not sure about online

I was under the impression that an ALR is valid on the sleeper, providing you have either :
A sleeper berth reservation (which costs extra)
or
A seated reservation (which is free and compulsory)

I think it's valid if you get the supplement, but I'm not sure about the seated.

When we did it (Dan had an ALR) we both bought advance tickets for the seats.

As far as i'm aware an ALR is valid on the sleeper in the seated section so long as you have a reservation. There is something on the Scotrail one where a priv one isn't unless you are safeguarded, that is my understanding anyway.

The PRIV complicates things. A lot of sleeper services are barred, you need to check ATOC's latest guidelines.

I think you will find that FSR will let you on anyway, assuming you have a reservation and your ALR.

But while we're on the subject. It's not valid in seats. It's only valid on sleepers if you date a box and pay the berth supplement.

It's actually cheaper to just get advanced fares.

The NFM (on the FRPP) states the following:

Validity

Unlimited travel on all scheduled National Rail services at any time.

Also valid on

· Caledonian Sleeper seated coach (reservations compulsory) or in a berth with payment of the appropriate supplement.

· Ffestiniog Railway

Therefore it is valid on the SEATS and in a BERTH but the berth is subject to the supplement (obviously if you have a 1st class ALR you will get a 1st class berth).
