Allocation of bus route numbers

Why was Stagecoach's X2 Preston to Liverpool changed to 2X Preston to Southport & X2 Southport to Liverpool when really non of the route is Express, especially the Southport to Liverpool section?

Is there still a separate 2 route from Preston along a much slower route than the 2X? This always used to be the reason.

Ivo, quite correct, I think the Preston to Southport No. 2 service calls in at Longton & Tarleton whereas the 2X goes straight along the A59.
