Advice on starting a new layout

Hi everyone,

I'm starting to make a layout but I've not done this since I was a child. I need advice on what glues to use as I don't want to get 50 odd different ones. I'm going to use PVA wood glue for track base and scenery but can anyone tell me the right glue to stick (permanent) people onto platform and scenery, one that dries clear. Also what's the best when you put together plastic buildings and the best to stick down buildings too.

PVA glue is probably going to be your friend for most things in model railways. You can buy big bottles of it from places such as Poundland for not very much and I can't see why it wouldn't work for passengers and buildings. Having said that, something stronger such as Polycement may be better for actually gluing the bits of plastic kits together. Card kits would be best suited for PVA glue.

Thanks for the advice Peter,I'll stay with the pva and buy some poly cement.

I’ve got quite a few different types of superglue that I use for most things, I’ll have a look at what I’ve got when I get home and let you know.

PVA is a simple water based layer that bonds 2 items together, it sticks almost anything diluted where required from plastic to plastic and ballast around the track. Removal remains possible afterwards.

Solvent glues work by melting the plastics together permanently. This works well with plastic kits but not so good for fixing them on the base.

Super glue creates a very strong layer between items of any kind that are dry / clean such as metal / plastic / china. Its permanent but there is a removal solvent available now

For plastic kits i use Plastic weld or pipe weld adhesive. For sticking People down then i use UHU from Poundland.

I'm staying away from superglue as wife banned it when I stuck myself to a wall but thanks for the tip

Yes just use a cocktaill stick to put the uhu on the base of your people. Don't use it to build plastic kits.

I use uhu for most things including people and Metcalfe card kits but I also have a bottle of PVA as well.

You can use tacky wax, which will hold them and allow you to change them, and it works well except in very hot conditions, this will stand them up well but not leave you screaming if you want to move them, it is made by Deluxe Materials.
