Advice on finding unreserved seats?

I'm taking a trip (Northern rail) with family and we have unreserved seats (I got reserved seats on the second leg with Cross country not sure why none for Northern). Is there any pattern to where unreserved seats are found or is it kind of random?

Northern don't offer seat reservations, their services are all unreserved.

Northern don't offer seat reservations. Some trains are marked as "reservable" but this is more of a hack to the system to enable the sale of some ticket types (particularly booked train only tickets) rather than actually representing the provision of seat reservations. Unfortunately this sort of issue is quite common as there appears no-one in a central position who is able or willing to attempt to deal with the potential confusion it causes.

The train starts from Nottingham so you should have no problem finding seats provided you are not last minute.
